When a Painting Asks to Be Revisited

Gurunatha (Portrait of Abhinavagupta and the lineage of Kashmir Shaiva Masters) 2026 Edition
This painting, Gurunatha, depicting Abhinavagupta and masters of the Shaiva lineage, was finished many years ago and had been hanging on our wall for quite some time.
But somewhere in the back of my mind, I always felt that it should include a few more of the important masters of the lineage.
Then, a few weeks ago, it fell off the wall.
I took that as both a signal and an opportunity to bring it back into the studio.
I added Utpaladeva, traveling by boat, and Śambhunātha with his wife in the mountains, and redid some of the mountains and clouds as well.
Now it is back on the wall—and I'm much happier with it.
Gurunatha is finished. Once again.
